Depictions of horses in the Basque region of Spain have been discovered which date back up to 14,500 years, according to experts.

Around fifty individual cave paintings have been identified in a chamber within a cave system located under the centre of the village of Lekeitio.

The paintings are some of the largest ever found with one of the horse paintings measuring almost 2m.

The works are spread across 15 meters of the cave wall, with archaeologists declaring them to be the most striking examples found to date on the Iberian Peninsula.
